Mission Quite Likely Impossible: George Clooney

I'm very belated in writing this, but please read on - it's worth it. This summer, not one, but TWO Ontario librarians - from here on in I will refer to them as my GALS (Gutsy, Amazing Librarians) - tried to deliver my book, Dear George Clooney: Please Marry My Mom to the man himself at his villa in Lake Como, Italy.

The first one, Gianna Mazzolin Dassios, actually made a video:

Apparently the young Italian man who answered was very polite, and told her he'd make sure George got the package. Did he? Well, let's just say neither Gianna nor I have heard from George yet. But I am mighty impressed; I'm not sure I would have had the courage to ring the bell!

My second GAL - Elizabeth Galli, the wonderful librarian at Valley Park Middle School in Toronto - didn't think to ring the bell ... But I'll let her explain. This is a direct quote from the e mail she sent me:

"SO....I went to Clooney's house (he pretended not to be in) to deliver your book. I took a picture of me in front and at the side of his house ... I put the book in a plastic bag then John threw it over the high iron gate. "I wrote a little note in the book, telling him I was a Teacher-Librarian from Toronto, live in Como for the summer... I put my address in the book, partly as proof I wasn't lying and deep down in my heart hoping that perhaps he might pop in for a glass or eight of wine ... Well, I'm sad to say he never bothered to visit me. I made sure my hair was washed everyday and when John left and I remained there alone, I even put make-up on during the day while waiting for Clooney ..."


I rather love the image of her husband chucking the book over the high fence. I hope no one was sitting in the garden.

And George: Your fans are legion in the world of librarians. And, of course, in the world of young adult novelists ... Wouldn't you love to do a cameo in the movie version? This girl - and her GALS - can continue to dream ...
